The Best Restaurants in Newcastle for Large Groups and Big Parties

Geordies are famous for their warm hospitality, so it's only natural that Newcastle would play host a selection of dining establishments where large groups and parties can be wined, dined and entertained. Whether you're gathering your nearest and dearest together for a birthday celebration, looking for a place to host a wedding breakfast or just fancy a good old-fashioned knees-up without having to worry about fitting everybody in, there are plenty of options to consider in and around Newcastle.

Blackfriars Banquet Hall | Friars Street, NE1 4XN
Blackfriars is an iconic, 13th century medieval restaurant (with food to match) that is more than capable of hosting a large party of any denomination, with various large rooms that can be hired privately. The Banquet Hall, however, is the room that really makes an impression. Used famously by King Edward III in 1334, the long, real oak dining tables and chairs (all handmade by local craftsmen), commanding chandeliers and bespoke banners give the impression of a genuine medieval dining hall. Because it IS a genuine medieval dining hall! The hall has its own facilities and can accommodate up to 50 guests, so is an ideal wedding or corporate dining venue.

21 | Trinity Gardens, Pandon, NE1 2HH

Named for its original location on 21 Queen Street, 21 is one of Newcastle's most iconic restaurants. Now located just north of the Tyne by the Millennium Bridge, the food is as simple and as elegant as the name, with uncomplicated, but wildly imaginative dishes that pull from traditional classics, giving them a distinctly modern spin. Stylish bistro dishes and warming comfort food is the order of the day and the menu can be comfortably customised for private diners who choose to hire out 21's “restaurant within a restaurant” private dining room. With space for up to 40 guests and a surprisingly affordable room hire rate, the room is incredibly versatile, with suitability for corporate dining, drinks receptions and celebratory meals. The décor is subtle and contemporary with a bold red and white colour scheme and the room even offers the flexibility to be opened or closed off to the rest of the restaurant via the switchable glass sliding doors.

As You Like It | 2 Jesmond Three Sixty, NE2 1DB
Jesmond's As You Like It is set over 3 floors and boasts 4 bars, as well as a delightfully 'posh pub grub' restaurant. The venue is also home to the 'chintz free' private function room known as the “Frangipani,” which offers an ideal venue for large parties. Indeed, the entire venue (seating 750 guests) can be hired out if so desired, so no matter how big the event, there should be package suitable for your situation. Aside from the Frangipani room, there is also a more intimate Beach Hut area and a private dining room with its own garden terrace. You're truly spoilt for choice.

Babucho | Lower Dean Street, NE1 3JD

Situated on the central Dean Street by the castle that gives the city its name, nestled between the shopping district and the riverfront, Babucho is a brasserie and bar that takes its stylistic queues from the New York scene. A restaurant, coffee house and after-hours bar all rolled into one, Babucho is a sophisticated playground for the city's movers and shakers, which means it's ideal for a business dinner. It also boasts three private dining rooms suitable for any size or style of function, which can all be extended for added flexibility.

The Herb Garden | Arch 8 Westgate Road, NE1 1SA

Quirky by design, The Herb Garden was opened in 2013 by a group of mates with a genuine passion for locally-sourced, healthy food and, of course, pizza. The result is comfortably the best pizza north of the Tyne and a venue with genuine class and character. Located in an old railway arch in the city centre, The Herb Garden prides itself on offering a diverse menu suitable for all preferences and diets in a relaxed and decidedly 'hip' atmosphere. For smaller parties or large groups, the restaurant also offers a private dining room for up to 14 guests with a private waiter, which can be hired for just an additional 15% service charge.

Great Jones Craft & Kitchen | 73 Main Street, BT33 0AE

Focusing on style and quality, Great Jones Craft & Kitchen is a unique casual dining experience in the heart of the city that truly inhabits the idea of the word “craft.” The restaurant works tirelessly with local suppliers to make sure their hearty, Irish cuisine uses only the best organic produce, and the extensive craft beer menu alone is reason enough to at least consider Great Jones for your next party destination. Named for the street in New York where the owners moulded their skills in the hospitality industry, Great Jones can also be booked for up to 60 guests for a sit-down dinner and up to 80 for a drinks reception.

Large groups can be a royal pain to organise, particularly at a restaurant, when you have to worry about sorting particular dining arrangements and making sure that there's something on the menu that everyone can enjoy. Hopefully, with this list, we've been able to at least take the initial worry out of finding a suitable location. Getting everyone to RSVP on time, however, is unfortunately still down to you!
