Over our many visits to York it’s become apparent that the restaurants, pubs and cafes available to us are of a high quality, serving traditional British food (and some not so traditional) in warm and comfortable environments.
For many, York is the place for a relaxing afternoon tea in a brick accented restaurant, for others, it’s the place for hearty British grub. In this guide, we’ve listed the top restaurants in York’s city centre along with some useful information about each one! We’d definitely recommend that you visit at least one of these eateries if you decide to visit this beautiful city.
Delrio’s Restaurant

Delrio’s Restaurant is a great restaurant to head to if you’re after a cosy, candle-lit evening meal. Owner and manager, Giovanni Delrio, opened the doors to Delrio’s Restaurant 26 years ago and business is still booming today.
Delrio’s Restaurant is in prime position for a day out in York - situated across from the historic Micklegate Bar and within a short walking distance from York railway station.
This restaurant sits beneath the hustle and bustle of York, in a beautifully decorated cellar. Delrio’s Restaurant is primarily an Italian restaurant although there is a heavy Sardinian influence. On their menu, you’ll find a range of pizzas, pasta dishes and speciality fish dishes.

Skosh opened in the summer of 2016, in close proximity to Delrio’s Restaurant, near the Micklegate Bar. Skosh sits in a newly refurbished Grade II listed building bringing loads of culture and history to the restaurant. Skosh is a high end restaurant catering to those who like to receive a dining experience.
Skosh is open for lunch and dinner from Wednesday through Sunday, and as they cater more towards the dining experience, their menu changes frequently.
For food, you’ll expect to see the more Michelin star-style foods: duck, lobster, pigeon, truffle and octopus.
Las Iguanas

Las Iguanas is a pretty popular, Latin America themed, restaurant with more and more of these restaurants opening, all over the UK, every year. Sitting in the heart of York, Las Iguanas is surrounded by amazing museums making it the perfect place to stop for a bite to eat after seeing the sights.
Las Iguanas is very family-friendly and caters to all types of people. They have an enormous range of dishes to choose from as well as vegetarian and gluten-free options. You can expect to find food from Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Peru and beyond, with a very large range of tapas dishes, too.
The Las Iguanas in York has a rooftop garden where customers can enjoy alfresco dining, whilst taking in the breathtaking views of York, all year round.

In the very center of York, you’ll find this gorgeous Brazilian restaurant. Surrounded by gorgeous architecture and fabulous landmarks, all whilst devouring authentic Brazilian food, eating out at Vaqueiros should definitely be on your list.
Vaqueiros is very meat orientated but they do have pescatarian and vegetarian options, too. There menu consists of numerous different types of meat, such as gammon, rump, pork belly and lamb; all of which are served alongside an all-you-can-eat Brazilian-style salad bar.
Vaqueiros also cater to people who only eat halal meat. By ringing up 48 hours prior to your booking and giving a £10 deposit, which is deducted from your bill, you can enjoy your Brazilian cooked halal meat.

Source is a beautiful restaurant that sits within the heart of York, and within close proximity to Clifford’s Tower, York Castle Museum and York Shambles. If you’ve been out for the day and are looking for the perfect little place to enjoy some high quality food, then Source should be on your list of eateries to visit.
Source specialise in slow cooked meats, super foods and vegetarian dishes, and pride themselves on offering dishes that are suitable for everyone!
Source has a very large food menu, and an even larger drinks menu! On their food menu, you’ll find vegan takes on popular meat dishes such as vegan seitan ribs, taco trays and vegan fish and chips. As well as superfood salads consisting of halloumi and lentils, with the option to add your favourite meat.
For meat-eaters, Source offer a range of burgers, meat trays and super stacked nachos!
For drinks, you’ll find a relatively large offering of smoothies, hot drinks, wine, and locally produced beer and gin.
Barbakan Cafe & Restaurant
58 Walmgate, York, YO1 9TL
Barbakan Cafe & Restaurant is a small establishment that invites its customers to reserve a table to ensure they aren’t disappointment upon arrival. Barabakan can only seat 45 tables in their cafe and with its sought-after, hearty East European cuisine, the cafe fills up pretty quickly!
Barbakan is in close proximity to Source, making it the perfect place to enjoy some hearty food after a day out, visiting Clifford’s Tower, York Castle Museum and The York Dungeon.
Barbakan Cafe & Restaurant offers its customers food from their breakfast, lunch, dinner and cocktail menus. For breakfast, you’ll find dishes such as, omelettes, full English breakfast and American pancakes. For lunch, you can enjoy food from a range of sandwiches, soup and salads with great offerings in their special menu, too. If you’re after an evening meal, Barbakan Cafe & Restaurant provide dishes from king scallops to beef cheeks, and everything in between!
Shambles Kitchen
28 The Shambles, York, YO1 7LX
Hands down, Shambles Kitchen is one of the most popular restaurants in York. Not only does it sit on the famous Shambles street, it’s also within the heart of York, making it very easy to venture into after a day sightseeing.
Shambles Kitchen is open Mon - Fri 9:00 - 15:30, Sat until 16:30 and Sun 10:00 - 16:30. All their food is handmade on the day in their sandwich shop, and due to their popularity, they sell out most days. Shambles Kitchen advise on visiting between 11:30 and 14:30 for the best chance to try their offerings.
As their food is freshly prepared, their menu often changes. The current offering at Shambles Kitchen consists of pulled pork sandwiches, toasted wraps and ever-changing ‘daily meaty specials’ which, like the name suggests, changes every day.
If you’re partial to a burrito, Shambles Kitchen also have a burrito smokehouse stall on the Shambles Food Court which sits around the back of the sandwich shop.
It’s evident that York has an array of different restaurants to choose from, some offering high-quality, freshly prepared fish, others offer a more conventional selection of hearty British dishes. It’s clear that, whichever type of food you’re in the mood for, York has you covered!
