Japanese cuisine is known for its fresh, seasonal, ingredients and balanced approach to every meal, and sushi is no exception.
Sushi is one of the more recent culinary crazes that has exploded in to popularity over the years. A growing favourite amongst all ages, sushi restaurants have become a popular sight throughout the UK.
Traditionally, sushi is prepared with one type of fish, or one type of vegetable. However, over the years, as it’s become more popular in America and the UK, a new spin has been placed on a centuries old cuisine. In Japanese and sushi restaurants in the UK, expect to find elaborate rolls filled with all sorts of delicious meat, fish, vegetable and sauce combinations, resulting in a real taste sensation! This kind of sushi is called “California-style”.
Luckily for us, we don’t have to jump on a plane to sample the delights of Japanese cuisine as we have some incredible Japanese and sushi restaurants right on our doorstep.
If you’re a fan of sushi, or know someone who is, then our restaurant gift cards make the perfect gift. The Restaurant Choice gift cards can be used at some of the UK’s most-loved restaurants including Yo!, Byron Burger, Cafe Rouge, and more!
What is Sushi?
INot to be confused with sashimi, which is exclusively raw meat or seafood, sushi consists of combinations of meat, vegetables, tofu, seaweed, and more served on, in, or with, flavourful, light, and slightly sticky rice.
If you don’t like fish or seafood, don’t strike sushi off the menu just yet. Tuck in to beef tataki (black pepper seared beef), crispy duck futomaki (shredded duck wrapped in rice and seaweed with cucumber, spring onion, and miso sauce), or spicy chicken rolls (crispy pieces of chicken katsu served with spicy shichimi powder and tonkatsu sauce).
The options don’t stop there though; many sushi restaurants also serve steaming bowls of ramen noodle soup, as well as stir-fried noodles, steamed buns, tempura-battered dishes, fried rice, and delicious dumplings!
If you’ve got a sweet tooth, then make sure that you sample some of the delicious Japanese desserts on offer. Popular choices include mochi; a super-sweet, glutinos, flavoured rice ball, and dorayaki; tiny, sweet pancakes filled with red bean paste, although you may also find them filled with delicious custard! And of course, no Japanese meal would be complete without a glass of Japan’s national drink; Sake. Sake is an authentic rice wine which can be enjoyed both chilled or warm.
How to Eat Sushi Properly
When you eat sushi, there is a proper way to do so. Whilst in many high-street sushi restaurants you won’t be expected to know the in’s and out’s of sushi etiquette, going that extra mile to learn some of the basics shows respect to the chef, and for the cuisine itself. With this in mind, we thought we’d share a few quick tips for eating sushi the right way:
Even though you have chopsticks, pick up the sushi with your clean hands instead to preserve the shape that the chef has worked hard to achieve for you. Chopsticks are for rice, noodles, and condiments.
Need soy sauce? Turn your sushi so that it’s fish-side down and dip this in to the soy sauce. The rice and soy should never touch. Eat your sushi in one bite; it’s considered rude to bite, or cut, the sushi in half as it should already be perfectly portioned. The ginger is designed to be eaten in between each piece of sushi to refresh your tastebuds; don’t pile it on top of the sushi!
If you find you need more wasabi, use your chopsticks to add just a little more to the fish.
